STAR and the Human Geography Research Group

In 2007, STAR established a partnership with Dr David Howard at the Institute of Geography (now Human Geography Research Group; www.geos.ed.ac.uk), University of Edinburgh, as part of its efforts to foster and expand its dialogue with academic institutions and inititatives on a wide range of transatlantic issues. Last spring, part of STAR's regular seminar series was a joint seminar with the Institute of Geography (University of Edinburgh). STAR was happy to welcome David Featherstone (University of Liverpool), who presented a paper entitled 'Subaltern nationalism and counter-global networks: the trans-Atlantic mutinies of the 1970s and the making of Irish political identities'. In November 2008, in another join event with Geography, STAR warmly welcomed Gustavo San Roman (University of St. Andrews) and Iain Stewart (Independent scholar) for a discussion concerning Scottish-Uruguayan connections, following Iain Stewart's paper on 'Don Heriberto, a tale of two identities: Sir Herbert Gibson, Scotsman and Argentine'. STAR has also introduced Dr David Howard (Institute of Geography, University of Edinburgh), speaking on Territory, Policing and the City: Debate and Practice in the Americas, in November, 2007.
