Symposia

The Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities hosts a number of symposia which support each of the different Research Themes that IASH Fellowships are based upon across four interconnecting strands:

  • a theme related to a cross-School initiative within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences;
  • an Enlightenment theme;
  • a concept-based theme of topical importance in academic research;
  • a theme related to the university and the wider world;

A programme of meetings and events is associated with each theme; some events are designed to span more than one concurrent theme. These range from visiting speaker occasions and day-long events to lunchtime brainstorming sessions on possible collaborations and funding applications. IASH also supports interdisciplinary funded projects including The Science of Man (2002-2006), Scotland's Transatlantic Relations (STAR) (2001- ), Scots at War (1995-1999). Regular input from Edinburgh Research and Innovation will inform participants of appropriate funding possibilities. Each theme is launched with an informal meeting of interested participants and an invited speaker colloquium. A summative event is held towards the end of the lifetime of each theme, with some kind of published outcome.

Currently, the IASH Research themes, on which fortnightly symposia and/or other types of events are held, are:

  1. Translations, Adaptations and Modalities (June 2008 - May 2011) Research theme in partnership with the Visual Arts Research Institute Edinburgh (VARIE)
  2. Dialogues of Enlightenment (August 2008 - July 2011).
  3. Theory in Practice, Practice in Theory (January 2009 - December 2011)
  4. The Academic and the Civic (September 2009- August 2012)
